Fly Fishing Fest Launches Summer Magical Memories at Lake Tahoe's Resort at Squaw Creek
Free events await guests
Olympic Valley, Calif. - Resort at Squaw Creek, a Destination Hotels & Resorts-managed property, kicks off "Summer Magical Memories," a series of themed weekends running from July 10 through August 30, with a Fly Fishing Fest on July 10-12. Guests staying at the hotel during that weekend will find a myriad of free events, from a Friday night outdoor welcome reception with beverages and appetizers at 6:00 PM to fly-tying and casting demos, and presentations on the latest gear. An on-water clinic on the Truckee River will be offered for $50 per person ($250 value). The angler catching the biggest fish during the clinic will be awarded a trout dinner for four in Six Peaks Grille, the resort's signature restaurant. Space is limited for all events and clinics, so reservations are highly recommended.
Resort at Squaw Creek's Fly Fishing Center, which features private, trout-stocked ponds, is run by Matt Heron, a Federation of Fly Fishers certified instructor. Heron has trained at the National Outdoor Leadership School in Chilean Patagonia and, before moving to Lake Tahoe three years ago, Heron spent time working for the Federation of Fly Fishers in Livingston, Montana. There, he fished numerous rivers including the Yellowstone, Missouri, Big Horn and Blackfoot River, made famous by the Norman MacLean novella and subsequent movie, A River Runs Through it.
The Center offers a variety of fly fishing classes and excursions, from the "Fish On" clinic to "Advanced Fly Tying" to guided fishing trips on the Truckee River and surrounding streams. One class that is popular with all ages - and particularly families -- is the "Aquatic Macro Invertebrate Sampling." The class answers the question: "What do fish eat?" This educational course begins with a short PowerPoint presentation on aquatic insects, before taking students to a hands-on class on the water. However, the most popular class remains the 3-hour "Cast n' Catch," which combines 1.5 hours of casting instruction with 1.5 hours of fishing on the stocked ponds.
"Summer Magical Memories" continues the theme weekends with kids' camps, spa health and wellness weekends with yoga classes and skin care clinics, golf clinics coordinated with the latest equipment demonstrations, and culinary weekends with classes and tastings to suit every taste. Events are open to guests staying at Resort at Squaw Creek.
For a complete list of "Summer Magical Memories" events visit http://www.magicalsquawcreek.com/. All weekends kickoff with a reception on Friday evening, with events continuing through Sunday. A portion of the activities do have an associated fee, but many events are free. For activities that do have a fee, packages will be available online and via Resort at Squaw Creek's reservations line.
In addition, Resort at Squaw Creek's summer voucher program will offer guests of the hotel discounts on dining, spa treatments, golf and other recreation. One voucher packet will be given for each room reservation.
