New Executive Chef at Resort at Squaw Creek, A Destination Hotel, to Focus on Identifiable Foods
OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. – May 12, 2016 – André Priemer, general manager at Resort at Squaw Creek, A Destination Hotel, today announced that Timothy Hmay has been hired as executive chef. In his new role, Chef Hmay will oversee all of the food and beverage operations at the property from Six Peaks, the resort’s signature restaurant, to casual dining in Sandy’s Pub as well as menus and food preparation for groups and meetings.
“Chef Hmay brings both a great background and philosophy to Resort at Squaw Creek,” said Priemer. “He’s got some very exciting ideas that will evolve our dining program even further in a way that I believe guests will respond to positively.”
Chef Hmay’s background has focused on fine dining, regional flavors and a variety of ethnic cuisine concepts. Most recently he oversaw dining operations for a number of professional sports organizations such as the Florida Marlins, Brooklyn Nets and the Miami Heat. In this role, Chef Hmay lead a group of experienced chef for clubs and concessions while he focused on serving many of the VIPs who visited the arenas.
Prior to working in arenas, Chef Hmay worked for a number of high-end hotels throughout Florida. He oversaw dining ranging from banquets to cooking the catch of the day for leisure fisherman as part of a boat and docking experience. It was here that he gained his appreciation for working with local artisans and restaurateurs to create unique dishes to be served in large scale venues.
“We are a local hotel and we support local,” said Chef Hmay as he explained how he’ll bring this philosophy to Resort at Squaw Creek. “I want to use Mother Nature to make my food great, I don’t want to use product.” For this reason, Chef Hmay plans to infuse the concept of identifiable food to the resort’s dining program. This means simple, organic, sustainable and seasonal products will be incorporated into all recipes.
An award-winning chef, Hmay competed in the Chaine des Rotisseurs and was inducted into the food and wine society. He received top honors at the 2012 Key West Master Chef Competition. His creations have been sampled at the South Beach Food and Wine Festival over the years. He’s also a supporter of the March of Dimes where he has cooked for a variety of fundraising events.
Chef Hmay is originally from Nebraska where he first understood the “farm to table” concept growing up in the heart of America. He’s excited to bring this homegrown philosophy to Resort at Squaw Creek and Lake Tahoe where he plans to experience all of what the area has to offer. From the outdoor recreation to the people the outdoor lifestyle attracts, Chef Hmay feels like it’s going back to his roots.
Chef Hmay is a graduate of Metropolitan Community College where he received his degree in applied science culinary arts and management. He also studied at the Culinary Institute of America. He and his wife recently relocated to the Lake Tahoe area with their seven month old daughter.
Resort at Squaw Creek recently completed a $7 million guest room renovation to further enhance the experience for travelers visiting the Lake Tahoe region. As part of the renovation, guest rooms have been refinished with soothing neutral textures and colors such as warm wood tones, rich leather, mixed metal and natural stone. Mindful of the property’s stunning views, the design includes new elements of light drapery and pops of color to complement and maximize Resort at Squaw Creek’s surroundings. The new modern meets mountain design aims to give guests a sense of place as it draws inspiration from natural surroundings found in the Olympic Valley and surrounding Sierra Mountain range.
With an abundance of amenities and location 10 minutes from the shores of Lake Tahoe, Resort at Squaw Creek is a AAA Four Diamond property offering guests year-round recreational opportunities including an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones Jr. championship golf course, guided fly-fishing tours, and access to miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as five restaurants highlighting regionally sourced ingredients, the award-winning Spa at Squaw Creek, three outdoor heated swimming pools, and a shopping promenade. In winter, guests enjoy ski-in/ski-out access to Squaw Valley USA, a private ice rink, and a Nordic center. The 405-room resort has been recognized as a “Top 50 Ski Hotel” in North America and “Top 150 Resorts: Mainland” by Condé Nast Traveler.
