Resort at Squaw Creek Fly Fishing Center Opens
Classes and Clinics Offered
Olympic Valley, Calif. - With the on-property ponds restocked and the snow clear from the meadow, Resort at Squaw Creek's Fly Fishing Center has announced an opening date of May 15. Featuring expert instruction from Matt Heron, Federation of Fly Fishers Certified Casting Instructor, the Center offers lessons and clinics for all abilities, from first-timers to skilled casters.
The fly fishing classes include the "Fish On" clinic, "Advanced Fly Tying," and guided fishing trips on the Truckee River and surrounding streams. One class that is popular with all ages - and particularly families -- is the "Aquatic Macro Invertebrate Sampling." The class answers the question: "What do fish eat?" This educational course begins with a short PowerPoint presentation on aquatic insects, before taking students to a hands-on class on the water. However, the most popular class remains the 3-hour "Cast n' Catch," which combines 1.5 hours of casting instruction with 1.5 hours of fishing on the private, on-property stocked ponds. Several other classes are offered, too.
Matt Heron, fishing since the age of three, earned the tools of the trade fishing the fabled trout waters of the historic Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. Since then he has traveled the world fishing many rivers including rivers in his prior state of residence, Montana. There he fished the Yellowstone, Missouri, Big Horn and Blackfoot River, made famous by the Norman MacLean novella and subsequent movie, A River Runs Through it. It was during his time in Montana that he earned the Federation of Fly Fishers Certified Casting Instructor designation.
Again, this past year, Heron spent two months traveling the country to promote the sport with the Fly Fishing Film Tour presented by Drake Magazine, which showcases the industry's top films.
As part of Summer Magical Memories, a special Fly Fishing Weekend will take place July 10-12, with a variety of clinics and fly fishing related activities highlighted for guests.
